A LITTLE KNOW-HOW

Know your fabric.
Love what you make.

A simple introduction to our first two materials — and the details worth knowing before your first cut.

Linen

Linen has an expressive woven texture and relaxed drape. Its natural creases are part of its character. Washed linen is an easy starting point for unstructured garments, table linens and soft home accessories.

Prewash before cutting, allow for shrinkage, and test a small piece with your chosen stitch. Always follow the product-specific care information.

Cotton poplin

A fine, plain-woven fabric with a smooth surface and light structure. Cotton poplin works well for shirts, dresses, lightweight garments and craft projects that benefit from a crisp finish.

Wash a sample before cutting. Press with a suitable cotton setting and test needle and thread on an offcut.

Width & weight

Width is the usable distance across a roll, usually shown in centimetres. Compare it with the width required by your sewing pattern before you choose a length.

Weight is given in GSM — grams per square metre. A lighter fabric tends to suit finer garments; a heavier one usually offers more structure. Weight alone does not describe drape, so consider the weave and material too.

Buying by
the metre

Our initial fabrics are sold in whole-metre increments. A quantity of 1 means 1 metre; a quantity of 3 means a continuous 3-metre length of the same fabric. The full listed width is included.

Follow your pattern's recommended fabric allowance. Add a little extra when matching patterns, testing a technique or allowing for shrinkage.

Color & care

Screen settings and lighting can affect how fabric colors appear. Product photography is a guide, not a guarantee of an exact on-screen color match.

Keep your care routine gentle. Prewash before sewing, separate colors where needed and check each fabric's detail page for washing and ironing guidance.
